AST 105
The Cosmic Frontier

Catalog Description:
Meets the associate degree general education requirement in Science.  Does not satisfy a lab science requirement.
3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
This course presents, in a largely nonmathematical way, the modern Western model of the universe and explains how the components relate to each other.  It emphasizes the processes that are currently thought to drive the evolution of the universe and the evidence that support the standard model.  The question of how life on Earth fits into the physical universe and the requirements for the existence of life other than on Earth are also explored.  At the end of the course, students should be able to interpret and critique current astronomical research as presented in the popular media.
Prerequisites:  Eligibility for ENG 111 and successful completion of any general education math.
