This course examines the literary
and cultural movements in American fiction, drama, and poetry from
1865-the present.
Note: You need
not take English 209 (American Literature
1) in order to take this course.
Learning Objectives
At the
conclusion of this course, students will be able to
- Analyze
and evaluate selected works of American Literature from 1865 to the
present.
- Trace
and compare the racial, ethnic, gender, and class differences that
constitute the American experience and are reflected in its
literature.
- Correlate
the relationship of literature to its intellectual, social and
cultural backgrounds.
- Identify
and trace changes in literary forms, themes, and conventions.

Getting
Started
Since
this is a 200-level course, the assumption is that students have mastered
the skills of English 111/112, 115/116, or 121.
Students should feel comfortable with the vocabulary and
practice of literary analysis and should be able to express themselves
clearly and grammatically in writing (as outlined in the Maryland
