Welcome

This course studies the literary elements of the Hebrew Bible and how the Hebrew Bible has influenced subsequent literature.

Learning Objectives

1. To read the Hebrew Bible in its entirety and thereby gain the ability to recognize allusions in subsequent Western texts.

2. To better understand the content of the Hebrew Bible by learning to appreciate the literary medium in which that content is conveyed.

3. To become familiar with the various genres and modes of telling in the Hebrew Bible (e.g., story, poetry, proverb) and the “literary” devices of that telling (e.g., hero, theme, image).

4. To become acquainted with some of the literature that derives from the Hebrew Bible.

Requirements at a glance

This course requires two 900-1200 word essays (3-4 typed pages) and  eight 300-350 word journals (1-1½ pages).   There will also be a midterm and a final exam.  Regular attendance and informed participation are also expected.

Suggested Texts

The Little, Brown Handbook, 11th ed., or similar handbook

A Glossary of Literary Terms, M.H. Abrams, or similar literary glossary

Getting Started

Since this is a 200-level course, the assumption is that students have mastered the skills of English 111/112, 115/116, or 121.  Students  should feel comfortable with the vocabulary and practice of literary analysis and should be able to express themselves clearly and grammatically in writing (as outlined in the Maryland C-Standard).  For a full description click on the "syllabus" button on the navigation bar on the left of your screen.
