How to Succeed in WMS 101:
Expert advice from students who have already achieved success!
General advice:
- Open
up your mind for new ideas and concepts. Do not have a pre-set
opinion when a discussion starts; listen carefully to all
possibilities.
- Pay
attention to key terms and concepts--the whole class is based on
them.
- Remember
what is discussed in class and in the reading, and think about it
outside of class (watching TV, talking with friends, watching
people).
- If
the class is required, have a positive attitude. It's not that
bad.
Preparing for Class:
- Do
the readings ahead of time.
- Come
prepared for discussion. Discussion helps you understand the
material more clearly.
- In
order to participate in class, you must have the homework done.
In Class:
- Come
to class.
- Try
not to be late or miss class because some of what we discuss isn't
in the book.
- Take
notes from lectures, films, and presentations.
- Don't
be afraid to voice your opinion.
- Participate
in all class discussions and don't miss class.
- Have
an open mind and be receptive to other people's points of view,
especially when discussing controversial topics.
Papers and
Presentations:
- Don't panic over the presentation. It's really not as bad as
it may seem.
- Start early on journal entries
- When
the presentation material is given, start early so you don't feel
rushed to get it done.
- Research
your presentation.
- Prepare
for writing assignments ahead of time--there is approximately one a
week.
- When
doing journals and other writing assignments, closely follow the
formatting guidelines in the syllabus.
Exams:
- Take
plenty of notes during lecture because mid-term and final are
cumulative.
Using Resources/
Getting Help:
- Use
the resources for help if needed.
- Take
advantage of any extra credit opportunities that may come along.
- Be
sure to ask questions in class about things you don't understand.
- Ask
Dr. Rabin about anything you don't understand or need help
with. She has a good range of office hours and is always
willing to help.
