Expert advice from students who have already achieved success!

General advice:

  • You can succeed in this class by attending, studying hard, doing assigned work, and turning it in on time.  You can feel confident in taking this class if you want to succeed.
  • Come to class with a willingness to learn and a good attitude.  I really think that's why our class was so fun.
  • Keep a dictionary and thesaurus handy.  Work at learning new words.

Preparing for Class:

  • To best succeed in this class, you should really pay attention and read the book.  Write down little notes from the book that make you understand better.
  • Read the lesson in the textbook ahead of class—then you will know what questions to ask.
  • Do all the homework assignments—they really help.
  • Homework is very important in this class.  If you don't do the homework, you will be behind in the class.

In Class:

  • Take lots of accurate notes.
  • Participate fully in class—it speeds the learning process and makes the class more fun for everyone.
  • Participation is a big part of the class, so don't be shy.
  • Don't be afraid to ask questions.  Surprisingly, other students are thinking the same thing.
  • Come to class and be on time!
  • Show up for class!  If you miss a class, you will get a whole section wrong on the exam.
  • Ask questions—“There are no dumb questions.”  Actually there are, but ask anyway.  Your tuition includes dumb questions.
  • Always bring your book because the class pretty much revolves around it.
  • Ask questions if you don’t understand something; it will just get worse if you don’t.
  • Turn in all your homework.  It is assigned to help you and it is an easy grade.
  • Focus: concentrate on the teacher instead of what is going on around the classroom.

Papers:

  • Don’t be afraid to try to writing techniques—that’s what the drafts are for.
  • Revise, revise, revise.

Exams:

  • Reviewing tests and making them up for a higher grade when allowed is a must and only helps you as a student be successful.

Using Resources/ Getting Help:

  • What I think helps students the most is going to the Writing Center for papers.  The help you get is amazing and it’s going to improve your class grade.
  • Get help from the teacher; go after class and get help in whatever it is you need it in.

The Last Word: You can’t fail this class if you study and work hard.
